To kick off the 2023/24 season of talks and presentations the Society is pleased to welcome David Rogers who will be giving a presentation about the work of Amnesty International in Latin America, specifically Argentina and Chile.
David has been an active member of his local Amnesty International group for over 35 years. During this time his group, Bournemouth, Poole & Christchurch, always took a special interest in campaigns from South America. Since retiring from the NHS last October, David has taken on the voluntary role of Amnesty International Country Coordinator for Argentina and Chile. In his talk David will give a brief overview of Amnesty International and the work done by the South America Country Coordinators. He will go on to talk about some of the human rights issues on this continent and discuss some of the campaigns.

The Fallas is a traditional celebration held annually in commemoration of Saint Joseph in the city of Valencia, Spain. The five main days celebrated are from 15 to 19 March, while the Mascletà , a pyrotechnic spectacle of firecracker detonation and fireworks display, takes place every day from 1 to 19 March. The climax of the festival is a massive bonfire.
The Wikipedia entry for this Spanish festival offers a good grounding for this month's talk by Ángela.

You are probably aware of the weather warnings issued for the south coast of England over the next 24 hours. The committee is concerned that the aftermath of the storm could impact on members' ability to safely travel to the meeting. The amber warning of wind, which is currently scheduled to end at 17:00 on Thursday evening, lists the possibility of travel disruption and damage to property.
An email has been sent to notify members that the meeting has been cancelled. The Wrens' presentation will be held at a later date.
With Christmas just around the corner join us for the society's annual Fiesta de Navidad. This year the society is hosting an evening of eclectic entertainment to celebrate the forthcoming festive season. A tapas buffet, including dishes cooked by society members, will provide sustenance whilst revellers can try their luck with a flutter on the raffle or experience the excitement and passion of Latin American dance with a demonstration from the Sabor Latino Dance Club.
Sabor Latino
are Portsmouth based, running a weekly dance club at the Portsmouth Rail Social Club, opposite Fratton Railway Station on Selbourne Terrace.
We are pleased to welcome back society member David Sinclair to give a talk about his recent travels in Mexico.

Society member Andres was born and brought up in England but his name gives a hint to his ancestry. Join us to hear Andres unfold the remarkable journey his father made from Spain to England during the tumultuous years surrounding the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War.
Andres's presentation includes photographs and documentation tracing his family roots back to rural Spain. This will be a truly fascinating story.
Many years ago, when they were still flying, John and Di visited the great Spanish centres of art: Barcelona, Granada, Madrid. However, it was not until they started to go to Spain by car that they discovered the wonders of Spanish fiestas. John and Di will take you on a colourful journey to explore what they found.
